Geezer-Geek's Mission

Why did we conceive Geezer-Geek? To teach senior citizens, or those who think they are too old or set in their ways, to use computers and the internet effectively.

Our purpose is to guide and help seniors, or any one over the age of thirty, born without a silver mouse in his or her hand, to use and enjoy the computer.

Statistics tell us that Americans are living longer and that every day a greater percentage of the population can be considered "senior citizens." Moreover,
these seniors are healthier and more active than past generations of older Americans. However, they are not part of the computer generations: those who have grown up with a computer on the kitchen counter, with email (or texting!) as their main communication method, and shopping for everything over the internet.

To be effective and happy participants in the 21st century, seniors must be willing and able to learn the new information technologies. Yet, this segment of the population generally has been assumed to be resistant to adopting new technologies. Surveys, however, demonstrate that this stereotype is out of date and that seniors are making use of computers in substantial numbers.

In a 1994 survey, statistics showed "overall computer ownership among adults 55 to 75 at 30%. That was 15 years ago. Today's numbers are vastly different, with multiple computers in each household.

The benefits of computer literacy are clear to a growing number of seniors: entertainment, staying mentally active, even earning a little money, keeping in touch with friends and grandchildren, making new friends and challenging our brains.

Together, we have over 50 years of practical computer experience. When we moved to Nyack in 2001, we made many friends, many of whom would qualify as seniors, and many who owned computers but were afraid to use them. Most times, those computers were cast offs from their kids, aging and slow. We found ourselves answering questions and helping them to navigate the web and new software. Now, our friends use email, surf the web gathering information useful to their lives. In short, they're as computer savvy as the computer generation.
